Durham residents will notice a few less places to visit in the downtown area. Liberation Threads, the local-female-minority-owned boutique that was voted “Best Women’s Boutique in Durham County” will be closing mid-February. This comes in the wake of a similar announcement by Magpies on West Main Street and the recent news of Scratch Bakery on Orange Street also shutting their doors this month. Each of these businesses are well established and have a strong following within the community. Liberation Threads has been featured in Durham Magazine, The Durham Herald-Sun, The News and Observer, Indy Week as well as on various blogs. The question is, as Durham continues to grow, what small businesses will survive downtown and will residents continue to strive to shop local?
